The company's shares have dropped a big in recent weeks, helped by a number of news reports on the potential launch of its own generic version of its blockbuster drug, Prilosec, which has lost US sales in the first quarter.

In late April, it emerged that the company had cut off supplies of Prilosec to treat a condition in which patients with heartburn had to use an over-the-counter medicine. The move was a shock to some, given that some analysts have said it could not come to an agreement to pull out of the patent cliff, despite the fact that a new version of Prilosec, which was being manufactured in the United States, had yet to be launched.

Prilosec is the world's most prescribed heartburn medication, accounting for around 17% of all prescriptions filled worldwide in the first nine months of 2024, according to data from the National Bureau of Economic Research.

The drug, which has an annual sales of $2.6bn (£0.9bn), will be available to buy from patients who have not yet tried its treatment and have been prescribed it. The cost of the drug will be based on the doctor's assessment of the patient's health, but it is expected to cost around $30bn (£14bn) to $40bn. The company said it was working with healthcare providers to ensure the drug is safe and suitable for the patient and is expected to achieve peak sales of $6bn (£2.7bn) in Q3 2024.

Dr Andrew Simpson, the chief executive of a drug development company, said: "This is a new indication for Prilosec. It's important for patients to be able to access this drug when they have heartburn and to have access to this medication in the first place."

The price of Prilosec has risen steadily since it first hit the market in 1999, when it was approved for use as a heartburn treatment. It is now the second-biggest prescription drug brand after Protonix.

As well as its cost, Prilosec is used in over-the-counter treatment to treat chronic heartburn, a condition that affects nearly 30 million people in the UK alone.

The drug, developed by AstraZeneca, is used in 20mg tablets of Prilosec, which is sold under the brand name Nexium and is the latest in a class of medicines known as over-the-counter painkillers.

The drug is also being manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline under the name Prilosec. Its sales have been down in the first six months of 2024 as the patent on Prilosec has expired, although the company has been trying to bring it to market.

But with sales of about $400m in the UK alone, the drug is expected to face competition from generic versions of its blockbuster cholesterol drug Lipitor. It has been widely advertised as being cheaper than its branded competitor, the cholesterol drug Lipitor, but it also has been nicknamed "the biggest drug on the planet" and "the best medicine in the business" by its makers.

AstraZeneca said it was "sporring" new research into the drug and has agreed to pay for the cost, while Pfizer, the world's biggest drug maker, has already offered to pay for the drug from its stock. A spokeswoman for AstraZeneca said: "We have made the commitment to ensure that this medication is widely available, and will continue to support this objective."

The decision to pull out of the patent cliff was not made in secret, and has not been made public. AstraZeneca said it had submitted new research to Pfizer to investigate its potential for clinical use. It had previously submitted clinical trials to Pfizer to gain approval to use the drug in its portfolio of cholesterol drugs. Pfizer also announced that it would seek to use the drug as a heartburn treatment and would pay for the cost from its stock.

Shares in AstraZeneca rose 25 cents to $50.37. The company was up about 3% on the close day. It said it had completed the clinical trials to confirm the drug's safety profile and that the company had completed the full year of trials to ensure the drug's potential was "effective".

The decision to pull out of the patent cliff was also not made in public, as a number of analysts have said it could have a negative impact on the company's growth.

Shares in the pharmaceutical company are up a bit in the wake of the stock market crash. The stock is trading at $30.23 and it was up nearly 3% after it posted a positive target for the year on its stock.

New England Medical Group has announced it is launching its own generic version of AstraZeneca’s “esomeprazole magnesium tablets” to help patients suffering from acid reflux with GERD. The company will begin selling the generic version of the same generic to patients through an OptiP® coupon and prescription, following a “Pharmacy First” pharmacy checkout.

AstraZeneca was one of the first pharmaceutical companies to announce a generic version of Nexium (esomeprazole magnesium), the active ingredient in Prilosec® (omeprazole), and the generic version of Prilosec® (omeprazole magnesium). The company said it will launch the generic version of Nexium at its new “Pharmacy First” pharmacy checkout.
